![]() After spending the entire story underestimating and misjudging the target of his investigation, opera singer Irene Adler, Holmes finds himself thoroughly humbled by nothing more than a woman's desire to live in peace with the love of her life. ![]() It's rare that a character's defeat can be categorized as a memorable moment, but in this case, it is more than appropriate. That said, here are just a few of our favorite notable cases: A Scandal in Bohemia In a career filled with amazing deductions and thrilling moments, it's impossible to narrow Holmes's achievements down to the highlights. What are Sherlock Holmes's greatest cases? John Watson, newly returned from the war in Afghanistan, and so the greatest partnership in English literature was formed. By the time we first meet him in A Study in Scarlet, he has firmly established himself as Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective, and is on the lookout for new lodgings. In college, Holmes was able to solve the case of the Gloria Scott for a school friend, an investigation that convinced him to make a career of detective work. He speaks very little about his family and interacts with them even less, with the arguable exception of his older brother Mycroft, who appears in three of the original stories. What we know for sure is that Sherlock Holmes was born in approximately 1854 to a long line of "country squires," as he describes his ancestors in The Greek Interpreter. (And in fact, the Audible Original podcast Moriarty does just that.) But who is the man behind the myth? If you want to find out read on-all the essentials you need to know about Sherlock Holmes's character, background, and finest achievements are housed here! Who is Sherlock Holmes?Ĭountless fans and scholars have spent decades speculating about the famous detective's past, as there's plenty of room for interpretation based on what little we see in the original Sherlock Holmes books. You can even subvert his story entirely, having him work alongside his most famous nemesis, Professor James Moriarty. How about reimagining him as another species altogether? You can do that too. Want him to relocate to another continent or another century? That works. Faithful adaptations and extensions of Doyle’s classics are always welcome and quite often excellent, but Holmes can go as far as human imagination dares to take him. Holmes has also proven to be quite the versatile figure. The mere mention of his name, or even just the sight of his signature deerstalker hat, is enough to evoke thoughts of logic, justice, and insight. I can't wait for the next instalment.Since his debut in the 1887 novel A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes has become more than just character-he is a veritable cultural touchstone worldwide. Steven Moffat is, after all, the man who rescued Dr Who from the self-indulgent, soap-opera obsessed, poorly scripted, moribund years of Russell T Davies and turned it back into a fun-packed joy to watch. Of course, I shouldn't have had any doubts. Moffat's pedigree as a comedy writer has added a new layer to the Holmes' scenario, and though there were several in-jokes in the first episode that only Holmes' aficionados would appreciate, there was enough general humour to lighten what might otherwise have been a dark canvas. But maybe, just maybe, the writers have created a Sherlock for the modern age who will stand the test of time and join a handful of other portrayals in the Pantheon of the greats. I'll always have a soft spot for Basil Rathbone's Holmes, and, on the small screen at least, I can't see anyone displacing Jeremy Brett as the definitive 'Victorian' sleuth. Casting is so important and this combination feels just right. ![]() Benedict Cumberbatch (what a name!) brings a dark edginess to Holmes that gives the whole piece a delightful 'gothic' feel, while Martin Freeman - if the first episode is anything to go by - will make a perfect foil as Watson. It was a terrific, fast-paced, edge-of-the-seat adventure. I've been a Sherlock Holmes' fan for what feels like forever, and, like others, was concerned that this modern version would be a disaster.
